Acupuncture for Musculoskeletal Pain Relief

Acupuncture for Musculoskeletal Pain Relief

Most of the time when someone is interested in trying
acupuncture they call or email and ask if acupuncture can treat the specific
location where they have pain. The answer is “yes”.

Whenever there is pain in the muscles, joints, ligaments,
and tendons it can be treated with acupuncture. This is because acupuncture has
the ability to return the blood flow back to healthy and normal. This is why,
as long as the location and nature of the injury was properly diagnosed and
properly treated, the patient will get up from the table feeling better or
feeling better within a few hours after the treatment is over.

The real question is how long will the benefit last and how
many treatments it will take to completely heal
the injury. This is more complicated.

If the injury is still in the acute stage it will usually
take one or two treatments to make the pain go away and maybe a few maintenance
treatments to prevent it from reoccurring. This is particularly true if you had
a hiking injury and you are determined to hit the trails again the next week.

If the injury is chronic, meaning it has continued to bother
you for weeks, months or even years, then this is going to take longer and
involve more types of therapy. For example, I may teach you how to massage the
area, use liniments on the area or use “take home treatments” to continue to
rehabilitate on the days between treatments. In some cases I recommend Chinese
herbal medicine which can have a profound pain relieving effect. This is
crucial for folks who are in debilitating pain and need help to get through the
day without using narcotic drugs.

These are the basic concepts of treating traumatic injury
with acupuncture. This covers mainly sports injury, falls, and the like. It
does not cover pain that is secondary to another disease process such as
cancer, painful menstruation, or migraine headache. These types of pain can
also be reduced or eliminated with acupuncture.
